Spirometry Workshop

This spirometry course is aimed at GPs and nurses within GP practices as an introduction to spirometry, or for those already performing spirometry who may wish to update and refresh their skills.

AIM

To provide the theoretical knowledge behind spirometry, as well as an interactive spirometry session where you will be able to perform spirometry under the guidance of an accredited spirometry trainer.

OBJECTIVES

  • Brief overview of spirometry and why it’s important.
  • Identify types of spirometry required.
  • Discuss contraindications.
  • Discuss reversibility testing.
  • Discuss accurate interpretation of spirometry.
  • Outline tips for reporting spirometry results correctly.
  • Common errors in spirometry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Understand what spirometry involves and how it is important in diagnosing and managing respiratory disorders.
  • Perform spirometry and to ensure the results are accurate.
  • Interpret spirometry results correctly.
  • Know the common causes for both restrictive and obstructive patterns.
  • Know when to refer your patient to secondary care.
  • Be able to identify poor patient technique.
