GP Minor Surgery Training – Birmingham

This highly practical one day course is aimed at practitioners who would like to perform minor surgery, or improve and develop their surgical techniques and competencies. 

Suitable for: GPs and GP Trainees.

Aim

To provide the knowledge, practical skills and procedures required to provide a safe and effective Minor Surgery Service.

Objectives

  • Understand the benefit of conducting minor procedures in general practice.
  • Discuss local anaesthesia for minor surgical procedures.
  • Identify various surgical techniques, including ellipse excision.
  • Demonstrate suturing techniques and wound healing with the use of skin pads and pig skin.
  • Inspect surgical equipment and room setup.
  • Understanding patient consent.
  • Discuss suture removal.
  • Be able to explain sterilisation and infection control.
  • Discuss the management of the following:

– Lipoma

– Cysts

– Skin lesions

– In-growing toenails

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits of minor surgery in general practice.
  • Identify requirements for minor surgical procedures including room setup and equipment needed.
  • Understand sterilisation and infection and control.
  • Discuss what is included within a minor surgery pack.
  • Discuss suture removal and identify techniques.
  • Understand the importance of patient consent.
  • Discuss the appropriate management of cysts and lipomata.
  • Identify the causes and management of in-grown toenails.
  • Demonstrate making an incision and excising the ellipse.
  • Discuss different types of needles and sutures available.
  • Demonstrate the various suturing methods on skin pads and pig skin.
