Minor Suturing Workshop

This half day, practical course is aimed at GPs, trainee doctors, nurses and AHPS and will develop knowledge and skills relating to the minor suturing of wounds.

AIM

To provide an overview of the assessment, care and management of wounds and teach basic suture technique.

OBJECTIVES

  • Overview of classification of wounds and types of wound dressings.
  • Discuss patient assessment, infection control and consent.
  • Identify correct suture selection and technique.
  • Overview of anaesthesia.
  • Discuss potential complications.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Describe how to assess a patient and wound before considering the use of sutures
  • Describe the different stages of wound healing and wound classification
  • Define the purpose of sutures and other wound dressings
  • Outline anaesthesia dosage and contraindications
  • Discuss the appropriate use of a range of suturing materials and equipment
  • Outline the characteristics of wounds which should not be sutured
  • Explore common suturing errors and consider removal of sutures
  • Summarise wound care information and advice given to patients
  • Practice the skill of suturing minor wounds using a simple interrupted suture.
