Cervical Screening Update for the Smear-taker

This update course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence required to enable delegates to function proficiently and confidently within the national programme.

Suitable for: All smear-takers in the Primary Care arena that require their update.

Aim

To refresh and update knowledge of the role of the sample taker in cervical cytology, and to help improve individual performance.

Objectives

  • Outline the principles of screening, and identify who is screened
  • Discuss the importance of quality assurance within cancer screening
  • Outline the anatomy of the cervix and the techniques for taking a good smear test
  • Identify the limitations of screening
  • Outline how to communicate with the patient throughout the consultation
  • Discuss HPV testing and screening
  • Discuss colposcopy and the management of the abnormal smear

Please note, Current cervical sampler’s (smear taker’s) should undertake update education every three years as per the recommendations within the Northern Ireland Standards for Nurse and Midwife Education Providers: Cervical Screening Sample Taking Final Version 02 December 2016.
