To provide an introduction to phlebotomy covering general issues such as health and safety, professional responsibility and a practical session.
OBJECTIVES
- Review of the anatomy of the arm.
- Discuss infection control and health and safety.
- Outline reasons for and complications of this invasive procedure.
- Identify accurate vein selection and demonstration of correct technique, choice of equipment and procedure.
- Legal and professional responsibilities.
- Practical skills technique workshop - clinical skills manikin and human arm.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course delegates should be able to:
- Understand anatomy and physiology and correct vein selection.
- Identify and describe equipment used for routine blood withdrawals.
- Describe and utilize the required steps to perform routine blood withdrawal.
- Describe actions that ensure safety and understand relevant professional and legal issues.
- Identify suitable vein selection and identify factors influencing this.
- Practice safely in terms of infection control and waste management.
- Recognise any complications arising and be able to take the appropriate action.
