Aim
To refresh and update knowledge of the role of the sample taker in cervical cytology, and to help improve individual performance.
Objectives
- Outline the principles of screening, and identify who is screened.
- Discuss the importance of quality assurance within cancer screening.
- Outline the anatomy of the cervix and the techniques for taking a good smear test.
- Identify the limitations of screening.
- Outline how to communicate with the patient throughout the consultation.
- Discuss HPV testing and screening.
- Discuss colposcopy and the management of the abnormal smear.
Please note: Current cervical sampler’s (smear taker’s) should undertake update education every three years as per the recommendations within the Northern Ireland Standards for Nurse and Midwife Education Providers: Cervical Screening Sample Taking Final Version 02 December 2016.
