The Assessment and Management of Minor Injuries

This 2-day course aims to increase safe practice within Emergency Departments, Minor Injury Units and General Practice in relation to the assessment, examination and management of patients presenting with Minor Injuries. This course will include lectures, group work, role play, practical assessments, and Q&A sessions.

Suitable for: Any healthcare professional who is interested in Injuries, i.e. Registered Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Junior Doctors, and those working in Emergency Departments or Injury Units.

Aims

This will provide healthcare professionals with a solid theoretical foundation in order to increase safe practice within Emergency Departments, Minor Injury Units and General Practice in relation to the assessment, examination and management of patients presenting with Minor Injuries.

Objectives

  • Be able to take Complete and Comprehensive history of patient
  • Understand relevant anatomy and physiology including an overview of closed limb injuries of bones and soft tissue
  • Identify overuse injuries
  • Understand the Ottawa rules
  • Gain an overview of Radiology
  • Understand the appropriate involvement POLICE and other support
  • Support and immobilise injuries using splints
  • Be able to provide discharge advice
  • Gain information surrounding foreign bodies
  • Assess and manage non-life-threatening injuries to the following:

 – Shoulder

 – Elbow

 – Wrist

 – Hand

 – Knee

 – Ankle

 – Foot

Please note, to be eligible for this training, you must have current employment and support to practice in an appropriate health care setting. It would be advantageous to have an allocated clinically experienced supervisor who will support your clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply effective history-taking skills to promote safe practice
  • Synthesise findings from a physical examination/ assessment, relating this to underlying patho-physiological processes, in order to develop a differential diagnosis
  • Demonstrate appropriate management of extremity injuries
  • Develop competency in some common basic minor clinical procedures
  • Utilise effective collaborative approaches in patient management, referral and discharge
