Aim
Gain understanding, practice and feedback on the common basic surgical techniques used in surgical procedures from expert tutors through hands-on practical workshops and demonstrations using animal tissue.
Objectives
- Prepare correctly for procedures, including how to gown and glove
- Hold and use surgical instruments correctly
- Understand the process of tying different knots
- Be able to drive a needle through tissue accurately
- Close a wound using sub-cuticular and interrupted sutures
- Administer local anaesthetic
- Practice the excision of skin lesions on animal tissue
- How to perform a skin lesion excision, under local anaesthesia (simulated exercise)
- Remove a sebaceous cyst, while using drainage
- Use a Laparoscopic Simulator to gain understanding on the different surgical techniques

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:
- Gowning and gloving
- How to handle surgical instruments correctly
- How to create surgeon’s knots and how to drive a needle through tissue accurately
- The use and creation of interrupted sutures, and sub-cuticular sutures to close a wound
- How to perform a skin lesion excision, under local anaesthesia (simulated exercise)
- How to remove a sebaceous cyst, including drainage and excision (simulated exercise)
- Basic surgical techniques: including a practical workshop where delegates will demonstrate hand-eye coordination through various stacking and cutting exercises
