AIM

To provide theoretical and practical knowledge in order to identify anatomically correct electrode positions and record a diagnostic ECG.

OBJECTIVES

  • Outline the basic anatomy of the chest and heart.
  • Discuss correct patient preparation.
  • Identify accurate electrode positions.
  • Outline how to record a diagnostic ECG.

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy of the heart.
  • Discuss how to prepare the patient including 3-point check, consent and skin preparation.
  • Identify reasons for recording an ECG.
  • Identify problems in obtaining a good quality ECG and suggest solutions to these.
  • Identify the steps involved in recording a standard 12 lead ECG, including electrode placement and the pre and post-procedure considerations.
