Aim

This nationally recognised accredited course is designed to deliver the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to obtain blood samples from patients for further investigation and is aligned to the World Health Organisation for the training content of Phlebotomists.

Objectives

  • Review anatomy of the arm.
  • Discuss infection control and health and safety.
  • Outline the reasons for this invasive procedure and associated complications .
  • Identify the correct veins for selection
  • Demonstration of correct technique, choice of equipment and procedure.
  • Understand Legal and professional responsibilities.
  • Practical skills workshop – clinical skills developed on manikin arms and vein pads.

Please note: We provide a logbook so each delegate can gain full competency under clinical supervision (the recommended amount is 20 hours, but this is entirely up to the individual). Please note that each delegate is responsible for sourcing their own clinical setting for supervision and competence signed.

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Understand anatomy and physiology and correct vein selection.
  • Identify and describe equipment used for routine blood withdrawals.
  • Describe and utilize the required steps to perform routine blood withdrawal.
  • Describe actions that ensure safety and understand relevant professional and legal issues.
  • Identify suitable vein selection and identify factors influencing this.
  • Practice safely in terms of infection control and waste management.
  • Recognise any complications arising and be able to take the appropriate action.

Part 1

This course includes 1-day pre-course self-directed study. Delegates will receive pre-course materials to ensure that they have adequate baseline knowledge before attending the second part of the course. The pre course materials will include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and safety standards of working as a phlebotomist.

Part 2

The 2nd part of the course includes 1-day face to face theory and dry laboratory experience. This part of the course is delivered by our experienced trainers, who will cover all the essential theoretical knowledge in basic phlebotomy and realistically simulate the phlebotomy procedure. Allowing you to develop and utilise your practical skills by drawing ‘dry’ blood from simulation manikins. You will learn both blood collection systems I.e. Vacutainer-Tubes & the Sarstedt S-Monovette system.

Delegates are expected to successfully meet the required outcomes and reach at least a 70% pass rate on a final MCQ at the end of Day 2.
On completion of the course candidates will receive an accredited certificate of attendance and not that of competence.

Delegates are encouraged to obtain supervised practice within their own area of work to become competent in the procedure (a minimum of 20 hours practice is recommended). A competence training pack will be provided to use in candidates own area of work, where it is recommended that candidates are supervised by a suitable competent practitioner.
